"The Mother of the Regiment"
Mrs. Caroline Cox, wife of Sergeant-major Cox, late of the 14th Light Dragoons, died at Battersea on Saturday, the 6th inst., at the age of 47 years. She was a native of Ticehurst, Sussex, but spent most of her early days in Maidstone, with some relatives. When about 17 years old she married Sergeant Costalo of the 4th Light Dragoons. They went to India when she was a little over 18, and she remained in that country 27 years - through the Affghan and Sikh wars, the war in the Punjaub, and the late rebellion, returning to England in January 1860. In the meanwhile her husband, when his regiment was about to return to England, volunteered into the 14th Light Dragoons, and afterwards died, leaving his widow with two children. She had, however, by intelligence and practical skill as a nurse and midwife, contrived to render herself almost indispensable to the English women in the regiment, and everybody was unwilling to part with her. She remained, therefore, and after giving a superior education to her son and daughter, the former now holding an appointment in the Commissioner's office at Kurrachee, Scinde, she married Sergeant-major Cox, who survives her. She was universally beloved by the officers and men for her unaffected benevolence, and by the wives of all ranks for her skill, and she had long borne the name of "Mother of the Regiment," which she well merited by her indefatigable kindness, sympathy, zeal, and cheerful disposition.
