Serious Disturbance at Belle Vue.
George Leonard and William McDermont, privates in the 4th Light Dragoons, and Samuel Clough, were brought up at the New Bailey on Wednesday, and charged with having assaulted the police at Belle Vue gardens on Monday night. It appeared from the evidence that McDermont, who was drunk, repeatedly tried to force his way into the ballroom, but was prevented by Police Sergeant Foster and other officers. Leonard, coming up at the time, struck Sergeant Foster on the head with the handle of a heavily mounted riding whip. The blow cut through the officer's hat and wounded him on the head, the whip also being doubled up by the force of the blow. Leonard was about to repeat the blow, when Police Constable Rogers caught him by the arm and prevented him. In the mélèe which ensued, Clough interfered, and struck the officers several times. -
Mr. Trafford said he was determined that the police should be supported in their efforts to preserve order in these densely crowded places of amusement, otherwise there would be no safety for the public. The assault by Leonard was a savage and brutal one, and he should fine him 40s. and costs, or order him to be imprisoned for one month, in case of non-payment. Clough interfered where he had no business, but only seemed to have used his fists. He was fined 10s. and costs. McDermont was discharged, as he appeared to have taken no part in the assault.
