DESCRIPTION - "I have set down a description of conditions at sea in sailing-ships in my time, from 1887 to 1910, and of my own experiences in them as sailor, mate and master, with some account of the handling of ship's business at various ports. In the past there must have been thousands of men who could have told the same story, but they did not do so, and I hope that my endeavour will be appreciated."
