DESCRIPTION - New Zealand Shipwrecks is essentially a work of reference, recording a total of 1750 shipping casualties over a period of 165 years. It is eminently readable and contains many epic accounts of disasters in which courage, endurance and self-sacrifice were particularly evident. Lengthy reports are given of wrecks of unusual consequence or drama such as the Orpheus, Elingamite, Manuka, Wairarapa, Wiltshire, Niagara and Wanganella, but the book also gives the essential details of every known shipping loss, down to the smallest schooners and commercial fishing vessels. The standard work on New Zealand shipwrecks, here revised and enlarged from the 1936 and 1951 editions.
