DESCRIPTION - A valuable contribution to the history of Steam Navigation in general, not withstanding that its special object is to trace its development in Australian waters from earliest beginnings to the present time. In 1831 the Sophia Jane, 256 gross tonnage and 50h.p., created great excitement as the first steamship to enter Sydney Harbour. From this it is a far cry to the present epoch of great floating palaces, with wondrous engines, measuring their tonnage and horse-power by scores of thousands, and able, through the marvel of wireless, to keep in touch with the world on the most distant courses. The volume includes a short life history and ultimate fate of almost every Australian vessel.
