DESCRIPTION - Maritime actions dominate the history of Salvesen. The development of the firm is traced from humble beginnings in Leith as a shipbroking agency, virtually a branch of another enterprise, to its position as the owner of a merchant fleet. Besides shipping, the firm was also ivolved in mining, mineral enterprises, tourism, and a paraffin factory in Norway. It was in whaling that diversification really paid off and the second part of the book is devoted to this topic. Salvesen were whalers for nearly seventy years, beginning in the 1890s in the Faroes and the Shetlands, before venturing into the southern hemishere. They were amongst the leading firms in this industry.
