DESCRIPTION - Ausralia and New Zealand were very early users of steam navigation. In Australia, The "Sophia Jane" began to ply coastal waters in 1831, and by the end of the decade a number of steam navigation companies had been formed. The paddler "Juno" made the first trans-Tasman voyage under steam in 1847, and the "Governor Wynyard" the first steamer to be built in NZ, was launched on Christmas Eve 1851. The great day of sail were still in full bloom, but surely and slowly, steamers took over from sail. They had the supreme advantage of being independent of the wind.
