DESCRIPTION - From 1904 to 1908 the Northern Steam Ship Company of NZ ran annual nine-day cruises along the north eastern coast of the North Island with its steamer Ngapuhi. These almost forgotten ventures were recalled by the author in 1983 when he reconstructed the adventures of the 50 or so passengers who made these adventurous voyages, exploring islands, harbours, a cable station, isolated settlements and bays with historic associations to the founding of the nation. The cruise is recounted chronologically with short text accompanied by wonderfully evocative photographs showing the fashions, pastimes, ship and shoreside activities of the passengers. Other chapers look at the passengers, the food, the ship and her crew - in all, a cruise to nostalgia.
