DESCRIPTION - The tea races by the China Clippers charging back from Asia to Great Britain in the mid-1800s are one of the legends of seafaring, with names such as Thermopyla, Aerial and Cutty Sark remaining familiar today. There were also the American tea clippers - Flying Cloud, being the most notable, and there was competition between ships of the two nations. Lubbock was foremost of writers recording the days when sail ruled the oceans and his history of the China ships, their races, the skippers, the crews, and, of course, the ships and their ports, is recorded here in great detail.
