DESCRIPTION - This history of Port Nelson was produced to mark the 50th anniversary of the harbour board formation in 1901, although shipping activity at Nelson had begun much earlier when it was recognised as being important to settlement by the New Zealand Company in 1841. Those early years are thoroughly traversed by the author to include the numerours small craft that provided coastal services, to those that travelled further afield within the NZ enviroment to the larger ships with overseas origins. Engineering challenges faced by the harbour board, and its predecessors, are also covered as is the social and economic importance of the port to Nelson's urban and provincial areas.
