DESCRIPTION - The classic study of the famous `Emergency Type' freighters built in incredibly short times in US yards in WWII remains as highly regarded today as when first published in 1970. Built on prefabricated, production-line principles, more that 2700 of the ships entered service at a time when German U-Boats were decimating Allied merchant fleets. While intended to have a limited life span, when hostilities ended they were a key component in reconstituting the shipping operations of many countries and some went on trading up to the 1980s, although numbers rapidly declined from the 1960s. The book covers the concept, development, production, operational use, modification for specialised roles and post-war service. Each ship is listed under its yard number, original name, completion date, engine maker, history and name changes, fate, as well as other pertinent detail. This 1973 revised edition updates information subsequent to the first edition of 1970.
