DESCRIPTION - Several generations of the Perano family were involved in whaling operations in New Zealand's coastal waters, operating mostly from bases in the Tory Channel at the north eastern point of the South Island. Of Italian, descent the family hunted whales from 1911 to 1964 when the last station closed down. Don Grady's excellent book colourfully and graphically recalls these tenacious whaling folk, their tight-knit community, advetures, mishaps, dangers and often economic uncertainty. An excellent study of a now near-forgotten aspect of NZ's trade and enterprise and its associated hardy men and women.
