DESCRIPTION - Canterbury Steam Shipping Company ships sailed on NZ coastal trades for more than 60 years after the company was formed in 1904. It did not remain totally independent for many years, becoming part owned by the monopolistic Union Steam Ship Company, but continued trading under it origina name, becoming coloquillay known as the Black Funnel" line. Gavin McLean's study of the company is based mainly on his access to its archives and some startling revelations of intrigue and manipulation emerge. However, the company was typical of its many counterparts and competitors who eventually had to surrender to the pressures of changes to trading patterns, improvements and convenience by other forms of transport and economic hard truths. The author has produced a fine record of the company, which will be long remembered, particularly at South Island ports.
