DESCRIPTION - In 1875 a group of South Australians formed a company to run two passenger ships between Adelaide and Melbourne. The service was popular but had to fight fierce competition. In the struggle against competitors, the directors and staff of The Adelaide Steamship Company extended into one trade after another and built Australia's largest shipping company. In this book, the ventures and adventures of Company men and the ships they served are woven into a narrative covering an important segment of Australian social history. It is a story of successes and failures, endeavours and rewards, during a century of revolutionary change.
