Mr. Chas. Gardner

Gardner, Charles, and Co. (Charles Gardner, David Brown, and John Tuck), Sawmillers, Manakau, and also Eketahuna. Bankers, Bank of Australasia. Founded in 1892, the business of this firm has rapidly extended. They are now owners of two mills, and have a part interest in a third. Their old mill at Manakau, with an average cutting capacity of 4000 feet of timber per day, is just cut out, and this plant, if not sold, will be placed in another bush shortly. Their new mill at Eketahuna, supported by a good mixed bush with about five or six years cutting, has just started operations, and is capable of an average turn out of about 4500 feet per day. They are also working a mill at Manakau, cutting principally white pine, with a capacity of about 6000 feet per day. Mr. Gardner hails from Hull, Yorkshire, and was educated at the Hull Grammar School, arriving in the Colony, per S.S. Florida, in 1884. For some time he was in the Wairarapa district, and afterwards for five years was chief booking clerk for the Manawatu Railway at Wellington. Mr. Brown is a native of the Upper Hutt, near Wellington, and is very well known in the district. Mr. Tuck was born near Catlin's River, Otago. Messrs. Brown and Tuck both had considerable experience before joining Mr. Gardner in establishing the Manakau sawmills. An engraving of the senior partner of this enterprising firm appears herewith.
