EXTRACTS FROM FOURTH HUSSAR by D. SCOTT DANIELL, 1959,
concerning the voyage of the 4th Light Dragoons to India in 1822:
`On the eve of leaving for India Colonel Dalbiac and new Adjutant Lt. Daly went to Ireland and obtained 147 volunteers
from the 18th and 19th Light Dragoons, which were being disbanded, including more than 20 valuable NCOs...
On 31 12 1821 at 3 o'clock in the morning the 4th Queen's Own Light Dragoons marched out from Romford Barracks for Tilbury,
bound for India. The Regiment embarked on two ships, the Dunira, and the Duke of York: `two most noble ships of 1400 tons each.'
By noon every man was on board. One depot or recruiting troop remained behind at Maidstone...
The Dunira dropped anchor in Bombay Harbour, on the 12th May 1822 and the Duke of York five days later.
The troops were trans-shipped into small craft which took them 250 miles north to the Gulf of Cambay...'
