Obituary: `...he was a vigorous writer, and one who had
a grasp of all Colonial questions. His wide and varied
reading, his business knowledge, and his scientific
attainments were valuable aids to him in his journalistic
career. His has been a truly chequered life - scholar,
storekeeper, miner, mine owner, surveyor, mining engineer,
contractor, journalist. Of his vigour and power of mind
and body, too much cannot be said. His strong personality
and his outspokenness made him enemies, but he had
friends - men who knew him and stood by him to the
last, and mourned for him as the loss of a friend is
mourned.'

The Sydney `Bulletin' says `The Commerce Act, for which
he was largely responsible, will be a splendid monument
to his memory.'
